WISE Names CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus
Winner of Second Annual WISE Champion Award
NEW YORK, NY (May 17, 2012) — Women in Sports & Events (WISE), the leading voice and resource for professional women in the business of sports and events, announced today that CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus will be presented the second annual WISE Champion Award as part of its 2012 WISE Women of the Year Awards Luncheon. The WISE Champion Award is given to a male executive who has championed women in the workplace.
Sean McManus was named Chairman of CBS Sports in February 2011, overseeing all CBS Sports properties. Prior to being named Chairman, McManus served concurrently as president of CBS News & Sports for more than five years. He was named President of CBS Sports in November 1996 and then added the title of President of CBS News in October 2005 becoming only the second person to hold both division titles. During McManus’ more than 15 year-tenure leading CBS Sports, CBS has become the year-round leader in network sports television.
“Sean McManus’ actions throughout his successful career as an advocate and supporter of the advancement of women make him the perfect recipient for this year’s WISE Champion Award,” said Kathleen Francis, National Board Chair and President, WISE. “Sean is a true leader who understands the value of creating an environment where women, both on-air and as part of his management team, thrive and help to serve as mentors for a new generation of professional women in sports.”
McManus was selected as the recipient of the WISE Champion Award based on the following criteria:
Champions the role of women in the business of sports and events through the successful creation of new jobs, mentoring and networking opportunities;
Clearly communicates a vision for women in the industry and their continued advancement; and
Shows consistent commitment to the promotion of women's careers and recognition of their professional accomplishments.
“As the proud father of a soon-to-be teenage daughter, I am honored to be recognized by WISE as a champion of women in the workplace,” said McManus. “CBS Sports has some of the most talented and accomplished women both on-air and behind-the-scenes in the sports television industry. I am proud of the environment we have created and fostered at CBS Sports where strong and successful women are paving the way for our daughters to learn, grow and succeed. CBS has produced three WISE Woman of the Year. I have no doubt that we will be adding to that list in the years to come."
As previously announced, the honorees for this year’s WISE Women of the Year are Gail Hunter, Senior Vice President of Events and Attractions, National Basketball Association; Marla Miller, Senior Vice President, Special Events, Major League Baseball; and Kim Williams, Chief Operating Officer, NFL Network. These three distinguished women will be honored at the 18h annual WISE Women of the Year Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, June 19 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. The inaugural recipient of the WISE Champion Award, which was presented at last year’s awards luncheon, was Ross Greenburg, former president of HBO Sports. This year’s event will once again be hosted by Tracy Wolfson of CBS Sports.
